Steps to Convalidation

Today Tomorrow Forever

While non-Catholics may enter valid unions without a specific “form” of marriage, Catholics are bound to “getting married in the Church.” The ordinary expression of this is the couple giving their marital consent to a Catholic priest or deacon. When an existing union was brought about in the absence of this element (and permission was not previously given by the Church), or one of the parties was not free to give marital consent, the union is invalid. To aid couples in this scenario, the Church seeks to remedy their situation through Convalidation.
