Lenten Guidelines for Fast & Abstinence

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.

The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

History of Diocese Book in the Works

The Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth has entered into an agreement with Éditions du Signe (EDS), a France-based publisher that has produced books on the history of a number of U.S. dioceses and institutions, to produce a book on the history of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth and its parishes in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese in 1969. Éditions du Signe has engaged North Texas journalist and North Texas Catholic Newsmagazine reporter Jerry Circelli to author the book. The book will be divided into two segments. One segment of the book will be the history of the Diocese. The other segment will be a history of each parish in the Diocese. Each section will be generously accompanied by historic photographs.

As part of his effort to write the history of each parish, Jerry will be contacting parishes over the next few months to gather not only historical information on each parish, but also current parish information. To ensure the history about your parish is accurate and complete, please return Jerry’s calls or email. Jerry also will be asking for photographs that may be used with each parish history.

The anniversary book will be the first comprehensive history of the Diocese and its 91 parishes. When the book is about to be printed in 2018, representatives of Éditions du Signe will contact each parish on how members of your congregation may purchase the publication.

Thank you to each parish for assisting Jerry in writing the history of our Diocese and our parishes.

Texas Catholic Voice

The Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops (TCCB) advocates on behalf of the Roman Catholic Bishops of Texas for policies and programs that support the life and dignity of every human person from conception through natural death. Under the guidance of the Texas Bishops, the TCCB staff conducts policy assessments to evaluate public policy needs and opportunities across the state. The legislative agenda and the bishops' position on bills filed by legislators are result of a rigorous process of reflection and consultation.  Bishops, with assistance from teams of clergy, ministry directors and lay persons, have designated April 4, 2017 as the TCC Advocacy Day at the Legislature. Each member of the Legislature will be visited on April 4 to explain the bishops' legislative agenda.

The Texas Catholic Voice is a publication of the TCCB to keep all Texas Catholics informed of the bishops' public policy efforts, the bishops' position on bills pending before the Legislature and on Advocacy Day.

Please feel free to share the attached newsletter with your parishioners.  To access the website with the newsletter click: Texas Catholic Voice.  The “Grow our Texas Catholic Network!” item at the end of this edition of the newsletter gives instructions on how your parishioners can subscribe. Please feel free to provide these instructions in your bulletin.

Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth Statement on Border Security

The Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth respects the responsibility of the federal government to secure our borders and ensure the safety of our citizens for the common good.

We urge federal officials to consider the real needs of immigrant families as they implement border security measures. We also remind federal officials, as well as all citizens of the United States, that we are a welcoming nation; our legitimate responsibility to provide safe borders does not justify hostility and animus against families of immigrants. As we read in Leviticus 19:33-34 "When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God." Just and legal immigration is essential to the health and flourishing of our nation. As Catholics we will not close the door to our neighbor in need out of our fear and selfishness.

Complete Statement
